The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality of education in Kenya by registering qualified teachers. According to Article 237(2) of the Kenyan Constitution, the TSC has the constitutional mandate to register teachers and review the education and training of those entering the teaching service. This requirement applies to both public and private learning institutions. To provide clarity on the registration process, the TSC has issued Legal Notice No. 50 of 2016, which outlines the Minimum Academic and Professional Requirements for Registration of Teachers. These requirements ensure that teachers possess the necessary qualifications to provide quality education to students. The academic and professional requirements vary depending on the grade and level of teaching. For Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), a minimum of CPE/KCPE plus an ECDE certificate from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is required. Alternatively, a minimum mean grade of D+ at KCSE and an ECDE certificate from KNEC are acceptable. For a diploma in education, a mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE and an ECDE certificate from KNEC are required. Additionally, a mean grade of C+ (Plus) and above is necessary for a university diploma. For a bachelor's degree in education, a minimum grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE, along with specialization in two subjects, is required. Furthermore, for visually and hearing impaired individuals, the requirements differ slightly. A mean grade of C- (Minus) is accepted for visually and hearing impaired individuals pursuing a diploma in education. It is important to note that these requirements serve as a guideline for aspiring teachers. The TSC aims to uphold the highest standards in education and ensure that teachers are well-equipped to meet the needs of their students. In conclusion, the Teachers Service Commission's Academic and Professional Requirements for Registration of Teachers play a vital role in ensuring the quality of education in Kenya. By setting clear guidelines and expectations, the TSC ensures that registered teachers are qualified to provide excellent education to students. Aspiring teachers should familiarize themselves with these requirements to pursue a successful teaching career in Kenya.
